Today there are still 21 distinct Native American pueblos, or villages, throughout the American Southwest. Historians, anthropologists and collectors have always had a fascinating journey tracking down and learning about the traditional pottery created in this region.
One can still find many famous potters and family-based pottery guilds throughout the region. Four of the most well-known Pueblos are Taos Pueblo (World Heritage Sight and National Historic Landmark), Santa Clara Pueblo, Hopi Pueblo, and the Acoma Pueblo. The Acoma Pueblo is considered the oldest continuously inhabited community in the United States, settled in the 11th century.
